An automated, customizable testing framework for applying Genetic Algorithm to generate test cases for web applications

For my honors thesis, I wanted to explore the use of genetic algorithm to automate web application testing. I proposed the use of genetic algorithm to generate usage-based test cases. Genetic-algorithm-based test case generation requires considerably less resources, is customizable and automated. I modeled usage-based test cases (i.e., user sessions) as components of genetic algorithm, namely genes, chromosomes and genomes, and created a customizable and automated genetic-algorithm-based testing framework. I carried out several sets of experiments, running the genetic algorithm and tuning various parameters to evaluate the effect of each parameter on the resulting generated test suite. Our results show that genetic-algorithm-based test case generation is very cost effective. The test suite is considerably smaller in size compared to the initial collection of user sessions and still maintained high resource coverage

Sign Following Robot

We worked with the Rover 2.0 tank made by Brookstone. We used OpenCV to detect blue signs via the rover's webcam. By finding the contours and measuring the area of the sign, the rover moves towards the sign until the sign is big enough to be read determined by an area threshold. Then we used Pytesseract to read the sign and execute it.

Known issues: It was scripted in Python 2.7.5. There are some wifi issues with Python 2.7.9 and above.

The Ancient Graffiti Project

The Ancient Graffiti Project is a long term collaborative project between Washington and Lee University's Computer Science and Sociology Department. It lets you browse through the graffiti and inscriptions of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Visit the website here.

For our month long Spring term class, I implemented the following features:

-Super admin profile and functionalities
-Addition/Removal of admins
-The authorization and authentication modules

Tools Used: Used Java (Srping MVC framework), JSPs, Javascript and PostgresSQL.

Grub Share

GrubShare bridges the gap between restaurants and food banks by offering a fast and efficient way for restaurants to let food banks know they have surplus food that day and displaying the shortest route among restaurants for food bank drivers.

We built it during a hackathon (HackNC) in 24 hours. I worked as the Project Manager and the lead backend. I set up the registration module, integrated arcGIS map with our backend, and wrote a parser that takes in data from GoogleMap api and put it in arcGIS api.

We also developed a mobile version of our GrubShare web app. The Android app is integrated with AWS Cognito and AWS DynamoDB. We used Google Maps to display the list of the restaurants willing to donate food.

Tools Used: Django Framework, JavaScript, arcGIS API, Android Studio, Google Map API, AWS Cognito and AWS DynamoDB.

PolyGreen

PolyGreen is my humble attempt at fixing our fast dying environment. PolyJute Bags is the first step of that goal.

PolyJute Bags

PolyJute Bags are made from jute fiber which is made from a native plant in my home country Bangladesh. It’s completely organic and degradable.
The fiber is very strong and you can reuse it as many as you want and the manufacturing process produces significantly less pollution. Moreover, the bags are very affordable
and therefore can be disposed of if necessary.

PolyGreen won the Entrepreneurship Summit 2014 and Social Business Competition 2014 hosted by the Venture Club. It was also featured in the school website. Washington and Lee University Store has replaced their line of resusable cloth bags with PolyJute bags.

Kids Go Coding!

Kids Go Coding aims to empower underprivileged kids in Bangladesh by teaching them how to code. I am one of their core members. My primary responsiblity is to make the curriculum for children aged 11-15. Right now, I am making a 'Intro to Python' curriculum. I also provide training to the people who teaches the kids and collaborate with them on making the lecture slides. With the help of Professor Levy (Associate Professor of Computer Science in Washington and Lee), I am building cheap computers using Raspberry Pi, AdaFruit monitors and 3D printed casings. We plan to reduce the cost by building our own monitors in the near future.

Using Neural Network to Distinguish between Cats and Dogs

We used a neural network to distinguish between cats and dogs. For our dataset, we used Kaggle's set of 25K images of cats and dogs. First, we divided the dataset into three parts: 12000 images for the training set, 8000 for testing set and 5000 for validation set. We used the file names to generate the target labels. We pickled the reshaped and grayscaled images and their labels. Our load_data() loads the pickled images and converts them into theano shared variables so that we can use our GPU to train our neural network.

We used MultiLayer Perceptron and Lenet5 network from deeplearning.com tutorials to make our neural network. We were able to successfully distinguish cats from dogs with ~70% accuracy. While we realize this is not revolutionary, we think this is a good result because the images are not straight-forward pictures of cats and dogs. There are a lot of noise in the images i.e. people holding the cat etc. But there are a lot of things to be improved. You can find the code in my my github repository.

Picasso

Picasso is an image generating software that creates images from mathematical expressions. Picasso parses the expression given by the user or generated randomly, and applies the mathematical expression on each x,y coordinate of the frame to produce a RGB value. The cumulative result is a unique image.

Tools Used: Java, JUnit, Subversion, Eclipse IDE.

* The resolution in the images are slightly off due to the HiDPI issues with laptops with 4K resolution.
